The Department of History at the University of Cincinnati invites application for a historian trained in either the history of East Asia (preferably Japan, but not excluding Korea or pre-20th century China) or Southeast Asia (any period) for a tenure-track position. The candidate should expect to participate in teaching regional surveys as well as upper-division undergraduate and graduate courses in his/her specialty. The ability to teach comparative, thematically oriented courses is also welcome. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate is expected to engage in scholarly research, and to make service contributions to the missions of the department and the university.
The University of Cincinnati is an urban, public university with an enrollment of over 43,500 students. The History Department is home to 23 full-time faculty and offers BA, MA and PhD degrees. Significant support for faculty research is available through the Charles Phelps Taft Research Center and the University Research Council. The teaching load is 2-2 with the coming transition to semesters in Fall 2012. PhD by 31 July 2012 is required.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies anticipate making the following faculty appointment: Tenure-track, Assistant Professor in Burmese Language, Literature and/or Culture. Beginning Fall 2012.
The successful candidate will teach Burmese language acquisition courses at all levels and courses in his/her field; mentor students; liaise with NIU's Center for Southeast Asian Studies and Burma Studies.
As a research-extensive university, NIU requires evidence of a strong research program as well as excellence in teaching. Additional requirements include: native or near-native fluency in Burmese; and a Ph.D. in Burmese or its equivalent by the time of appointment.

Each year the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, New York University, makes about 7-10 appointments of visiting research scholars. We are now accepting applications for fellowships beginning in fall 2012. ISAW's scope embraces the history, archaeology, and culture of the entire Old World from late prehistoric times to the eighth century AD, including Asia and Africa. Projects of a theoretical or comparative nature relevant to this domain are also welcome. Academic visitors at ISAW should be individuals of scholarly distinction or promise in any relevant field of ancient studies who will benefit from the stimulation of working in an environment with colleagues in other disciplines. Applicants with a history of interdisciplinary exchange are particularly welcome. The Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) seeks outstanding candidates for at least four tenure-track faculty positions. For the first time in decades, DUSP has an opportunity to significantly augment our faculty during a single hiring cycle. We are looking for individuals who can help develop our program in urban transformations in the 21st century. Climate change, political instability, demographics and cycles of urban growth and decline represent significant challenges to urban and regional planning. Stanford University's Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship of Scholars in the Humanities, is an opportunity for recent Ph.D. recipients in the humanities to develop as scholars and teachers. Up to 4 fellowships will be awarded for a two-year term (with the possibility of a third). Fellows teach two courses per year in one of humanities departments and participate in the intellectual life of the program. Fellows are expected to be in residence during their appointment. Fellows will be affiliated with the Stanford Humanities Center and have the opportunity to be active in its intellectual life.

A fully funded three and half year PhD scholarship is available to work under the supervision of Professor James Warren, who is coordinating one research stream of a 7-year Major Collaborative Research Initiative (MCRI) anchored at McGill University entitled ‘The Indian Ocean World: The Making of the First Global Economy in the context of Human–Environment Interaction’.
Applications are invited for candidates with similar or complementary research interests. These interests can be pursued through study of the impacts of climate related and other natural hazards (cyclonic storms, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, drought) on the economy, society and history of one or more nations in Southeast Asia from the 10th to 19th centuries. This includes, but is not limited to, projects oriented towards: reconstructing spatial, temporal and social patterns in vulnerability to the adverse effects of climate variability and natural hazards in the Philippines (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and floods), Vietnam (cyclonic storms and floods) and Indonesia (volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis). Projects may also aim to improve understanding of the geographic, temporal and social variables that correlate with increased vulnerability or resilience to natural calamities across time.
Projects may also be dedicated to another key research domain of the Major Collaborative Research Initiative, namely maritime trade and the circulation and flow of commodities and peoples in the Indian Ocean World ( stretching from the coast of East Africa to the shores of the South China Sea) between the 10th and 19th centuries.
The successful candidate will be based at Murdoch University’s Asia Research Centre in Perth, Australia, which has a strong concentration of scholars with specialist research expertise on Southeast Asia. Joint supervision with Professor Warren and a relevant team or Centre colleague is thus possible, depending on the precise project. The Centre holds workshops, seminars and conferences that further enrich the intellectual climate on offer to the successful candidate. The three and a half year scholarship carries a stipend of $27,222 per annum plus up to $10,000 of additional funding for archival research and fieldwork in Europe and Southeast Asia, and conference attendance support. Civilizations Project is pleased to announce for a one-day intensive workshop
at the University of Toronto on March 11, 2012. The Theravada Civilizations
Project is housed at Arizona State University and facilitates the collaboration of scholars from universities such as Chicago, Harvard, Cornell, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Washington, Toronto, Vermont, Louisville, Missouri State, London(SOAS), and the École Française d’Extrème-Orient.
More than 150 million people practice Theravada Buddhism throughout the world. The scholarly study of this religious traditions began with the scrutiny of Pali and Sanskrit literature and today includes many disciplines such as
cultural studies, literature, religious studies, ethics, anthropology,
philology, philosophy, history, political science, urban studies, and art and
material culture. The workshop brings together doctoral students and
post-doctoral academics in the humanities and social sciences whose current
research engages aspects of Theravada Buddhist practices, literatures or
artistic traditions in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Burma, Nepal and Sri Lanka or
among its global networks of diaspora communities and others practicing Insight
(vipassana) meditation. Participants will discuss and receive feedback on
current work in progress that may range from dissertation proposals, to the
early phases of research and dissertation writing, to revising recent
dissertations for publication.
Applications must include: (1) a current Curriculum Vitae, and (2) a 10-page,
double spaced statement consisting of either (i) a dissertation proposal; or,
if the work is already in progress, (ii) a research statement, including its
intellectual approach, or (iii) a 10 page prospectus (that includes a table of
