Scholars of Southeast Asia Dominate 2007 Fulbright Competition Of the thirty-five applicants from UW-Madison for Fulbright awards for 2007-2008, eight were students with research interests in Southeast Asia. All eight of these applicants were awarded grants and all are or will soon be in Southeast Asian conducting research or engaged in teaching. The eight students were offered IIE-Fulbrights (from the US Department of State, Institute of International Education). Two of these declined their IIE-Fulbrights to accept Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Disseration Research Awards (from the US Department of Ecucation). The 2007-08 recipients and their research project are as follows: IIE Fulbright Recipients for 2007-08 for Research Francis Bradley, Doctoral Dissertator in History: "The Making of Patani: Religion, Politics, and the Birth of an Identity" Alison Carter, Doctoral Student in Anthropology/Archaeology: "Trade and Sociopolitical Development in the Pre-Angkorian Cambodia" Christine Elliott, Doctoral Dissertator in Second Language Acquistion: "English Language Teacher Training in Laos: Contextualizing Policy and Practice" Andrew Jaynes, Completing Law Degree (JD): "The Political Economy of Intellectual Property Rights in the Philippines" Conor Lauesen, Recent BA in Political Science: "Transitioning Times: The State's Identity and Influence in Contemporary Vietnam" IIE Fulbright Recipients for 2007-08 for Teaching Azmil Tayeb, Recent MA in SE Asian Studies, Teaching English in Indonesia US Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Award (DDRA) for 2007-08 Mitchitake Aso, Doctoral Dissertator in History of Science: "Colonial Ecologies: Environment, Health, and Politics in French Indochina (Vietnam)" Taylor Easum, Doctoral Dissertator in History: "The Sacred Space of the State: State-Formation in Nineteenth-Century Lanna and Siam" This is a great achievement for our program and reflects the quality of
our students and faculty. Although UW-Madison students of Southeast Asia
have long done well in these competitions, this was the most successful
year. In recent years, several other UW students have held Fulbright research
awards, among them: Andrew Hickin (Musicology, Indonesia, 2006-07); Kristy
Kelly (Education, Vietnam, 2006-07); Shane Strate (History, Thailand, 2006-07);
Kevin McGahan (Political Science, Malaysia, 2005-06); Nancy Nguyen (SE
Asian Studies, Vietnam, 2005-06); and Erick Danzer (Political Science,
Indonesia, 2004-05).
