Kabor Thao wins Pageant

Kabor Thao, our new CSEAS Student Assistant for Outreach and currently a junior at the UW-Madison majoring in Counseling Psychology, was just crowned Miss United Refugee 2005 at the 5th Annual Asian American Summer Festival, sponsored by the United Refugee Services of Wisconsin. Festivities took place on August 27th and 28th at Reindahl Park and the MATC Theatre. Contestants were judged in 5-category process--the pre-interview, public introduction, traditional costume, talent and the final interview. Kabor danced a modern Hmong dance she choreographed for the talent category. Says Kabor, "It was a valuable experience that was important to me because it emphasized coming together as an Asian community instead of separating into different ethnicities. The experience will help me have a stronger voice in the community, so I can help our youth better understand the value of education and the need to speak out about their concerns."
