- R. Anderson Sutton,
earned his PhD in ethnomusicology at the University of Michigan
in 1982 with a dissertation on Javanese gamelan music and has been
teaching ethnomusicology and directing the Javanese gamelan ensemble
at UW-Madison since then. He has published three books and over
30 articles on music of Indonesia, including seminal articles in
the two major music encyclopedias, a chapter in the most widely
used world music textbook in the U.S., and a recent book on arts
and cultural politics in South Sulawesi (see list of publications
for details). He has won numerous grants for his research (from
NEH, SSRC, Asian Cultural Council, American Philosophical Society,
etc.) and lectured widely throughtout Europe, the U.S. and Asia.
His recent research has moved from traditional music and issues
of cultural pluralism in Indonesia to the interaction of global
media and music in broadcast and recording (in Indonesia and elsewhere
in Asia). He has twice served as director of the UW-Madison
Center for Southeast Asian Studies, and remains co-director
of the UW-Madison research project on "Media, Performance,
and Identity."
