Workshop: Indigeneity in SE Asia

With the generous support of the Open Society Foundations, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison hosted a workshop regarding “Indigeneity in Southeast Asia” on March 20-21, 2015. The objective of the workshop was to critically assess how the idea of “Indigenous peoples” is being variously conceptualized and applied by different groups of people, organizations and governments in Southeast Asia.

Participants of the two-day workshop included a number of Southeast Asian scholars from various countries and ethnic groups in the region conducting research on this topic, as well as others from the United States with a particular interest in indigeneity in Southeast Asia and Indigenous peoples more generally.

The workshop was by invitation only. However, those not initially invited, including students, were granted special permission to participate in the workshop.

The workshop was organized by Ian Baird,
