CSEAS Fellowships (AY 22-23)

Deadline: February 14, 2022

​Center Fellowships are awarded as 40% Research Assistantships or Project Assistantships, and pay a modest living stipend, as well as provide health insurance and tuition remission. Fellowship recipients must be enrolled in at least six credits per semester of Southeast Asian Studies courses while receiving this fellowship.

Who is Eligible: All students enrolled in graduate degree programs at UW-Madison and whose primary research area is Southeast Asia. Applicants can be at any level of graduate study, incoming students to dissertators. For more information and to apply online, click here.


CSEAS Field Research Grants (AY 22-23)

Deadline: February 14, 2022

CSEAS will offer a limited number of field research grants (up to $7000) for pre-dissertation, dissertation, and thesis research on Southeast Asia. These awards are not intended to cover the full cost of dissertation research but are aimed at providing funds: 1) to conduct pre-dissertation research aimed at enhancing major research proposals (Fulbright, SSRC, NSEP, etc) for dissertation projects; and 2) to facilitate or supplement field research for dissertation projects themselves. Field research awards cannot be held concurrently with Center or FLAS fellowships or with major external grants.

Who is Eligible: Applicants must be graduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with at least one year of graduate work completed. Pre-dissertators must have a letter from their departmental advisor clarifying that the field research is directly related to the intended dissertation (or thesis) topic and that it is aimed at strengthening the dissertation proposal and future applications for major dissertation research grants. NEW! Social Justice Hmong Studies Awards (AY 22-23)

The CSEAS and the Hmong Studies Consortium at UW-Madison, with the generous support of the Henry Luce Foundation, intend to provide awards in 2022-2023 related to “Social Justice Hmong Studies,” broadly defined. The intention is to support racial justice-oriented Hmong Studies research and activities that connect Southeast Asian Studies and Hmong American Studies through the Hmong Studies Consortium. Students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities who are affiliated with the Hmong Studies Consortium will be prioritized for these awards. Awards include:

  • Two research awards of $5,000 each to support graduate or undergraduate Social Justice oriented Hmong Studies research in Southeast Asia (possibly during the summer of 2022).
    • Eligibility: Research awards are open to students from UW-Madison and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
  • One award of a graduate Hmong Studies Social Justice Fellowship at a 37.63% level, including tuition remission and a stipend for living expenses to work on a topic related to Hmong Studies and Social Justice, broadly defined.
    • Eligibility: Fellowships are only open to students from UW-Madison.

Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) 2022

SEASSI Tuition Scholarship and General application deadline: April 1, 2022

Study a Southeast Asian language intensively this summer! FLAS Awards cover tuition and provide a $2500 summer living stipend. FLAS Awards are open to currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students who are U.S. citizens/permanent residents and studying a language at the 2nd or 3rd year level.
