Mark Sidel will discuss the recent detentions and convictions of a number of prominent Vietnamese civil society activists, the reasons for the crackdown, and the broader pressure in recent years on civil society and the nonprofit community in Vietnam, with some comparisons to similar developments in China.

Mark Sidel works on law and civil society in Vietnam, China, India and elsewhere in Asia. He worked for many years at the Ford Foundation in China, Vietnam, Thailand, and India, and came to UW in 2011.
