Due to the phenomenal work of Chris Hulshof and the GETSEA Network, UW-Madison will be joining a simulcast screening of the film Breaking the Cycle, about the rise and then dissolution of the Future Forward Party in Thailand.
Film Synopsis: When Thailand’s military junta finally held elections in 2019, the son of an automotive industry stood as a candidate, turning the country’s political world on its head. The son of a well-known Thai billionaire businessman, Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit helped found the Future Forward Party in 2018 and registered himself as a Prime Ministerial candidate the following year. Excited by the way he changed the political landscape in the country, for the first time Thailand’s younger population took an active interest in government. Emphasising accountability and transparency, Thanathorn won millions of followers. He resembled a rock-star more than the conventional Thai politician. But his popularity notwithstanding, Thanathorn still faced a monolithic and deeply conservative political establishment. Aekaphong Saransate and Thanakrit Duangmaneeporn’s feature debut is a bold and uncompromising account of a troubled political landscape and a thrilling portrait of an individual who challenged it.
