Social Justice Hmong Studies Funding

The deadline for AY 2022-2023 awards has passed. Tentative deadline for AY 2023-2024 is in Spring 2023.

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) and the Hmong Studies Consortium at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are pleased to announce that with the generous support of the Henry Luce Foundation, we intend to provide awards related to “Social Justice Hmong Studies,” broadly defined. The intention is to support racial justice-oriented Hmong Studies research and activities that connect Southeast Asian Studies and Hmong American Studies through the Hmong Studies Consortium. Students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities who are affiliated with the Hmong Studies Consortium will be prioritized for these awards.

In particular, we intend to provide:

  • Two research awards of $5,000 each to support graduate or undergraduate Social Justice oriented Hmong Studies research in Southeast Asia
    • Eligibility: Research awards are open to students from UW-Madison and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Students who are affiliated with the Hmong Studies Consortium will be prioritized for these awards. For more information on affiliation, contact Ian Baird at ibaird@wisc.edu.
  • One award of a graduate Hmong Studies Social Justice Fellowship at a 37.63% level, including tuition remission and a stipend for living expenses to work on a topic related to Hmong Studies and Social Justice, broadly defined.
    • Eligibility: Fellowships are only open to students from UW-Madison. Students who are affiliated with the Hmong Studies Consortium will be prioritized for these awards. For more information on affiliation, contact Ian Baird at ibaird@wisc.edu.

Applicants for either award should submit project statements no longer than two pages explaining what would be done if the applicant were to be awarded either a research award or a fellowship award, and particularly how what the applicant would do fits with the idea of social justice. Submit your information and materials via the online application (check back in Spring 2023 for the AY 2023-2024 application).

Applicants are encouraged to contact Ian Baird (ibaird@wisc.edu) if they would like to discuss possibilities for the above awards.
